Maybe you are lactose-intolerant, or perhaps you’re trying to eat a more plant-based diet. Whatever the reason, many of my clients have explored non-dairy milk options at one point or another. Unfortunately, many non-dairy milks (with the exception of soy milk) aren’t a great 1-1 substitute for cow’s milk because they contain minimal protein. Ripple, which is made from pea protein, is an exception to that rule, and also tastes fantastic! Even the “original” flavor (which I think tastes the best) has half the sugar of a glass of low-fat milk, and has 8g of protein per 8 oz serving. It also has 50% more calcium than milk and some beneficial omega-3 fatty acids from algal oil. If you want to lower your sugar intake even further, there is an unsweetened variety with zero added sugar. The protein in Ripple comes from yellow peas (yep, peas!), but the taste is the closest to actual milk that I’ve found in a non-dairy replacement. You can find Ripple in the refrigerated section at Whole Foods, Stop and Shop, Wegmans and Target.
