Get Ready for Back to School with these Quick Nutrition Tips
Mornings can be hectic for busy families, yet providing a healthy and satisfying lunch for your little leaners is important. Keep them fueled up while maintaining a low stress morning with the following tips:
- Try to pack balanced lunches the night before so kids can grab them and go in the morning. A balanced lunch includes a serving of fruit, vegetable, whole grain, protein and fun snack like small bag of tortilla chips or square of dark chocolate.
- Get kids involved in packing their own lunch by starting a snack station in the pantry and in the fridge. Clear a pantry shelf at eye level for the kids to store dried fruit, granola bars, cereal, applesauce, whole grain crackers, nuts and nut butters. Do the same in the refrigerator for yogurt, sting cheese, low-fat milk, dips like hummus, and fruits/veggies. Storing healthy snacks in a more visible place encourages your kiddos to choose these foods!
- Prep meals and chop produce on the days you have the most time – kids are more likely to choose fruits and veggies when they are already washed and cut-up. There is nothing wrong with buying the pre-washed and pre-cut items at the store either when you are really short on time.
- Need some ideas for lunches, wraps can be healthy and provide so much variety depending on how you fill them. Use whole-grain tortillas and spread on mustard, hummus, oil and vinegar-based dressing, or pesto sauce. Fill with grilled chicken or assorted lean meats, cheese, tomato, sliced onion and shredded Romaine lettuce. Or try it Mexican style with ingredients like guacamole, salsa, black beans, grilled chicken and brown rice. There are countless combinations!
Scrumptious sides might include string cheese, fruit cup, lower sugar snack bar (less than 10 g sugar and more than 3 g fiber), raw veggies and hummus, yogurt, applesauce, nuts, small bag of popcorn, etc.
